The success of our pediatric eye-care initiative “Nanna Kannu” soon led us to explore avenues to help seniors and poor patients in their eye care needs.

Understanding the Problem

Community Eye Care Camps

The “Gift of Vision” program run by the Sankara Hospital aims to provide cataract surgeries to seniors and needy patients in rural communities where there is a high incidence of cataract. The surgery is free for the patient and the cost of the same is borne by donors.

With the support of our kind donors, we decided to support the first 100 patients on a pilot basis in Gudibande, Chikkaballapura. Given the success of the effort in patient mobilization we then continued the effort and extended in to many more camps in Chikkaballapura, Mandya and Tumkur.

The identified patients undergo preliminary medical fitness test onsite and are then brought to the hospital in a bus, on a single day. Following further medical examination those fit for surgery undergo the same the next day and are discharged a day after that and transported back to their villages. We bear the entire cost of the logistics including the food, transport and any medicines needed by the patients.
